How to Clean and Care for Artificial Flowers

Artificial flowers need far less attention than fresh flowers, but occasional cleaning and careful placement help preserve their colour, texture and shape. The safest method depends on the materials and construction of the individual product, so product-specific instructions should always take priority.

Dust lightly and regularly

For routine care, use a clean microfibre cloth, a soft cosmetic brush or a feather duster. Support delicate flower heads with one hand while brushing dust away with the other. Work from the upper petals down toward the leaves so loosened dust does not settle on areas you have already cleaned.

Use cool air for detailed stems

A hair dryer on its coolest, lowest setting can help move dust from intricate foliage. Keep it at a generous distance and test a small area first. Avoid hot air, which may affect adhesives, coatings or shaped components.

Be cautious with water and cleaning products

Do not soak an arrangement unless its product instructions specifically permit it. Dyes, adhesives, internal wire and surface finishes can react differently to moisture. Avoid household sprays, bleach and abrasive cleaners. If spot cleaning is appropriate, use a barely damp white cloth and test an inconspicuous area first.

Reshape after cleaning or unpacking

Gently fan out compressed leaves, separate overlapping petals and adjust flexible stems a little at a time. Work slowly at joints and glued areas. Small variations in height and direction usually create a more natural result than forcing every stem into the same position.

Choose a considered location

Unless a product is expressly described as suitable for outdoor use, display it indoors. Prolonged direct sunlight, high heat, steam and damp conditions may affect colour and materials over time. A bright room away from sustained direct sun is generally a more suitable setting.

Store with space around the flowers

If you rotate arrangements seasonally, place them in a clean, dry container with enough room to protect the flower heads. Avoid stacking heavy objects on top. When the arrangement returns to display, dust and reshape it before placing it in its vessel.
